Preliminary and final storm reports
NOAA storm reports come in two versions, and the counts differ between them.
- Preliminary reports are what National Weather Service offices send in as storms happen: hail size, wind speed or damage, and tornado sightings from trained spotters, emergency managers, the public and NWS staff. The Storm Prediction Center gathers them into a daily list within minutes. We show SPC's filtered version, which drops likely duplicates, and refresh today's and yesterday's reports every 10 minutes. Preliminary reports are not verified: one tornado can be reported several times, and locations and sizes are as reported.
- Final reports come from NOAA's Severe Weather Database (SVRGIS), built from the NWS's verified Storm Data. It adds tornado paths, ratings, deaths and injuries, and drops or merges reports that didn't hold up. NOAA publishes a year's final data months after the year ends; when it does, we replace that year's preliminary reports.
On this site, 1955–2025 reports are final and 2026 reports are preliminary. The National Weather Service's severe thresholds are hail of 1 inch or larger (0.75 inch before 2010), wind of 58 mph or more or wind damage, and any tornado. Reports are what people saw near a place; they are not damage assessments, and storms in sparsely populated areas often go unreported. Radar hail estimates fill those gaps on the hail map and the storm-day pages.
Using the data
Each storm-day, month and year page can be quoted with a link. To work with the reports yourself, download them as CSV by state and year. For programs, the free National Storms API returns hail near a point and storm-day summaries as JSON. How the numbers are made: methodology and sources.
