Michigan tornado history

From 1950 through 2025, 1,160 tornadoes touched Michigan, according to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, the 25th most of the 48 contiguous states and DC. The National Weather Service rated 19 of them F4/EF4 or stronger (2 F5/EF5); along their paths they killed 266 people and injured 3,690. The deadliest, on June 8, 1953, was rated F5 and killed 116 (Genesee County). From 2016 to 2025, Michigan averaged 14 tornadoes a year.
