About these files
Source: NOAA Storm Prediction Center. Through 2025: the SPC severe weather database (SVRGIS: tornadoes since 1950, hail and wind since 1955), which NOAA reviews and finalizes. From January 2026: SPC's preliminary daily storm reports, which can contain duplicates and are revised before they enter the final database. Data through November 6, 2026.
Storm day: 12:00 UTC to 12:00 UTC the next day (7 a.m. to 7 a.m. Eastern Standard Time), the SPC convention. time_utc is the report time.
Units: hail size in inches; wind speed in knots as SPC records it (with mph alongside; many are estimates, not measured gusts); tornado intensity on the Fujita (before February 2007) or Enhanced Fujita scale, blank where unknown.
Counties are today's (2024 Census) counties; reports filed under counties that no longer exist are placed by their location.
Reports are what spotters, the public and NWS staff reported; they are not damage assessments, and rural areas and earlier decades are undercounted. Files start with two lines beginning with # that credit the source; skip them when loading (pandas: comment="#").
