About these numbers
The city totals are radar-based estimates for the roughly 1 km grid cell at each city's center point, so a storm that hit one side of town can show less than it dropped there. Radar can over- or underestimate rain, especially far from a radar site, in mountains and where rain mixes with hail or snow; melted snow counts as rain. A spotter report is what one observer measured at one spot, often a storm total so far.

Spotter reports: National Weather Service Local Storm Reports (LSRs): measurements sent to NWS offices by trained storm spotters, CoCoRaHS and co-op observers, NWS staff, the public and others, archived by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet (Iowa State University). Reports are what each observer measured at one spot, often a storm total so far, and the NWS doesn't quality-check every one. Exact repeats count once.
